A watch is a fixed object. The case, the dial and the hands were decided long before it reached you. The strap is the one part you can change, and it changes more than you might expect. The same watch can feel formal on Monday and relaxed on Saturday.
These are the five decisions that do most of the work, with examples from straps I have made. The Cartier Santos appears in the photographs because it shows the effect so clearly, but the same thinking applies to any watch.
1. The leather
The first decision is the leather itself, because it sets the texture.
- Alligator has a pattern of scales that reads as formal and detailed. It is the classic partner for a dress watch.
- Large grain alligator uses the bigger scales. The pattern is bolder and more graphic, and it holds its own against a strong case.
- Goat leather has a fine, even grain. It is lighter and quieter than alligator, and gives a watch a more relaxed, modern look. It is what I use on the goat leather strap for the Citizen Zenshin.
2. The finish
The same alligator can be matte or shiny, and the two could be different materials for all the eye can tell. Matte absorbs light and lets the watch lead. Shiny returns light and makes the strap part of the jewellery.
I have written about this choice in detail in matte vs shiny alligator.
3. The colour
Colour is the decision people think of first, and it is the most personal. A few observations from the bench:
- Black and dark brown make a watch more formal and let the dial stand out.
- Mid browns, honey and hazelnut warm a watch up, particularly with gold or two-tone cases.
- Navy and deep blues are the easiest way to wear colour: close to neutral, but clearly a choice.
- Greens, from bottle green to apple green, sit beautifully against steel and yellow gold.
- Purples, pinks and reds turn the strap into the statement. They work best when the watch itself is simple.
A colour you would never wear as a jacket can be exactly right as a strap, because there is so little of it.
4. The stitching
Thread is a thin line, but the eye follows it. Thread in the same colour as the leather disappears, and the strap looks clean and uninterrupted. A contrasting thread, cream on brown or white on navy, outlines the strap and makes it look sportier and more handmade.
You can also change how much stitching there is. A classic stitch runs around the strap. A side stitch leaves the length of the strap clean, with a single stitch on each side below the spring bar. A strap with no visible stitching at all is the most minimal. Every stitch is made by hand, as described in why saddle stitching matters.
5. The lining
The lining is the private part of the strap. Zermatt leather is the classic choice, discreet and comfortable. A goat leather lining in a colour of its own, red inside a black strap or blue inside a grey one, is seen only when you take the watch off, or as a thin line at the edge. Nobody else may notice it. You will, every day.
More on this in what Zermatt lining is and why the lining matters.
Putting it together
These five choices multiply. A few combinations, to show the range:
| Character | Leather and finish | Colour | Stitching | Lining |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Formal | Shiny alligator | Black or dark brown | Tone-on-tone | Zermatt |
| Understated | Matte alligator | Grey or navy | Tone-on-tone | Zermatt |
| Warm and classic | Matte alligator | Brown or ochre | Cream contrast | Zermatt |
| Bold | Shiny or large grain alligator | Green, purple or blue | Tone-on-tone | Contrast goat lining |
| Relaxed | Goat leather | Any | Contrast | Goat lining |
Why more than one strap makes sense
Once you have seen a watch on a second strap, it is hard to go back to owning one. A dark, formal strap and a lighter or brighter one cover most of a year between them, and each lasts longer for being rested. It is also why two or three straps ordered together are priced more gently than one: the saving for a strap collection applies automatically in the cart.
If you would like help choosing, send me a photo of your watch and tell me how you wear it. I will suggest two or three combinations I think would suit it.
